A flagship golf tournament that hosted the world’s top players raised £60,000 for a Hampton hospice.
Shooting Star Chase was chosen as the official charity for this year’s BMW PGA Championship, held at Wentworth Golf Club over the bank holiday weekend.
The charity supports families with a child or teenager not expected to reach their 19th birthday and provides free care 365-days-a-year.
On the first day of the championship the European Tour Wives Association (ETWA) made an inspiring and emotional visit to the Hampton hospice and met staff and children.
Marie Fasth, chairman of ETWA, said: “It was an emotional and heartbreaking visit for all of us.
“As mums ourselves, it was awful to see these children but it was also a memorable occasion to see how much this place was doing for them.
“This is clearly a very important charity for the children it helps, providing care and long-lasting, precious memories.”
The main fundraising drive during the tournament involved generous spectators donating £1 for a programme and drawsheet, which totalled £32,153 and was collected by a team of 70 volunteers.
Funds were further boosted at the Wednesday celebrity pro-am, where professionals donated their fee for the day and celebrities and amateurs entered a hit the green competition, helping to raise more than £26,000.
