Imelda May has revealed her first live performance of her new album will be at the Hampton Court Palace Festival.

May says she loved last year’s festival and cannot wait to share her new songs.

She says: “Last year’s festival was one of my favourite gigs. It was a highlight because I didn’t know what to expect, being an outdoor festival. The crowd were fantastic and I always appreciate that.

“Also, Hampton Court Palace is such a beautiful place, it just looks magnificent.”

She will play songs from her new album, some of which she has not given names yet, but she thinks Right Amount of Wrong, Tribal and Oh My God will go down well with the crowd.

May has shot to fame in the UK since the release of her album Mayhem in 2010, but it seems we were taking a while to catch up with our Irish neighbours, as she has been hugely popular there for some time - with a triple platinum album under her belt.

Born in the Liberties, Dublin, she began performing in clubs when she was 16 years old and had the honour of being occasionally barred from her own shows at Dublin’s Bruxelles club for being underage.

After 15 years of singing in other people’s bands she finally took the plunge and set up her own band in 2006. May has a few festival gigs lined up for the summer, but she says her main priority is writing the new album – which she will test out at the Hampton Court Palace Festival.

She says: “I hope people come, I’m ready to rock out. I’m so excited, I can’t even tell you. I had a baby last year so I have been writing in my time off. A lot of people thought the new album was going to be all lullabies, but I’m rocking out even more.”

Hampton Court Palace Festival; Hampton Court Palace, Thursday, June 13, to Monday, June 24.

Imelda May will perform on Wednesday, June 19. Tickets cost between £32.50 and £70 for the gigs. For more information and tickets, visit hamptoncourtpalacefestival.com.
