Richmond Council’s deputy mayor has been raising awareness of a cancer charity based at West Middlesex Hospital after her own experience with the disease.

Councillor Lisa Blakemore shared a cuppa, a cake and a chat on May 17, at the Mulberry Centre, to raise money for people who have been affected by cancer.

Coun Blakemore, who is also the tenants’ champion for the borough, said: “As someone who has experienced cancer myself, I am very keen to meet others who have been similarly affected and publicise the many excellent specialist services available locally.

“Using my roaming brief, I am currently making contacts across social housing providers in the borough to make sure that people who are affected by cancer know where to find information and support.”

The coffee and cake sale was part of the Mulberry Centre’s Mulberry Month fundraising and awareness initiatives during May.

The independent charity offers free information and support to anyone affected by cancer, through a range of services including counselling sessions and support groups, relaxation therapies, information on relevant welfare and benefits and workshops.

Emma Cartwright, the Mulberry Centre’s director, said: “We are delighted that Coun Blakemore is publicising the work of the Mulberry Centre in the borough.

“The Mulberry Centre is looking to do more outreach work in Richmond in the coming year in order that more people know we exist as a resource for them and their families when cancer has impacted on their lives.”
