A writing-duo is within touching distance of breaking into the West End with their musical, Diana: The Musical.
St Margarets resident David Smart and Brian Watson from Croydon have been writing together for 10 years, after working in advertising for about 15 years.
Mr Smart said: “We have just placed the idea with one of the biggest in the industry who has been very interested in the idea. Rather than pitch to several at one time we’ve been selective with who we want to give this to.”
Mr Smart, of Newry Road, and Mr Watson approached ex-Daily Mail royal correspondent, Richard Kay, who was a close confidant to the Princess of Wales, to help them write the book, which they hope to turn into a musical.
Mr Smart said: “His in-depth knowledge of Diana and the events that we knew would be the framework of the show has been invaluable and gives the production amazing credentials.”
They are still in talks with West End producers, but they have had a lot of positive feedback and also interest from Broadway.
Mr Smart, of Newry Road, had no previous experience in writing musicals, but hopes to continue writing them in the future.
He said: “Luckily I have a fairly thorough background in a lot of styles of music composition, and I’ve been very fortunate to have been able to earn my living from composing music and doing something I love.”
