A woman was moved along after she ran past a fire cordon and under an unstable fallen tree.

High winds meant the tree fell onto the Stanley School building in Stanley Road, Teddington, shortly before 4pm today, May 9.

The tree is still leaning on the brand new school building and is propped up by one branch, onlookers said.

Twickenham firefighters attended, as well as council workers, and cordoned off the area.

Onlookers watched in amazement as the woman dashed past the cordon and underneath the tree.

Max Ellis, who lives in nearby Cromwell Road, said: “There were firefighters at both ends and she somehow managed to run under the thing and try to make a break for it under the tree.

“I’m not sure why she would do that, maybe it is a shortcut but I don’t know what is down Strathmore Road that is worth risking your life for.

“The tree was wobbling quite a bit and was actually rocking to and fro. There is only one section keeping it up so I think it’s going to go any minute.”

Firefighters from Twickenham and council officers from building control are still at the scene waiting for the highways team to arrive and remove the tree.
