A Richmond man who is living on £1 a day has ploughed through the third day of his challenge.

David Garcia has managed to keep to his £1 a day limit by eating congee for breakfast each day – a type of rice porridge popular in Asia.

The 68-year-old said: “I was very excited about lunch because I had promised Amy Dyduch, a reporter from the Richmond and Twickenham Times, a lunch for 40p.

“I had planned to make a tortilla, a Spanish omelette and was nervous how it would turn out.”

The lunch ended up costing 35p after Mr Garcia re calculated the measurements of ingredients he used.

He said: “This is not to say I’m a clever clogs because living on £1 a day is doable, it’s just tedious.

“In two days time I can stop and go back to eating what I like, millions do not have that luxury which is why it’s important that people contribute.”

For dinner he had dhal with rice and cabbage as part of his fundraising feat to raise £1,000 for Tzedek, a charity that helps people escape the poverty trap.
