Road campaigners who would like the council to consider their street for a 20mph limit can make their application online.
If the road is selected the council will carry out a speed and volume survey and review the accident record for the road before an officer meets with a representative from the road to talk through options.
Applicants will still need to provide evidence as to neighbourhood support, and the council said, depending on how many applications are made, it may not be possible to investigate all the suggestions.
Councillor Chris Harrison, cabinet member for traffic, said: “A number of councils around the country have introduced blanket 20mph limits across their boroughs.
“We don’t believe this is necessarily the best thing to do and we want to take a more localised approach – engaging with our communities on the matter.
“In some places, introducing a 20mph limit will improve the street environment for all road users, including car drivers, by reducing the number and severity of collisions and casualties on roads, improving traffic flows and making the borough a safer and better place to live in.”
