Fines of £3,920 were issued to 49 people caught urinating in Twickenham’s streets during the Army vs Navy match at the weekend.
A record 72,000 service personnel and rugby fans descended on Twickenham on Saturday, April 27, for the famous, and occasionally notorious, match.
With numerous complaints being made by residents before the match’s kick-off at 3pm, police set about issuing £80 fines to anyone caught in the act.
Richmond Council and the police teamed up to alert visitors not to use streets as urinals, after many residents had complained about the numerous street wee-ers on match days.
Police borough commander chief superintendent Clive Chalk had warned: "My officers and I want everyone visiting the borough to be respectful of the residents and enjoy themselves. Make no mistake though if you need to spend a penny; don't let it cost you £80."
The match was won by the Army by 34-19. Pubs shut at 8pm, as agreed after disturbances in previous years.
No further incidents have been reported yet, but a further update is to come.
