A former director of Action for Children has been chosen as the new chairman for the borough’s children’s safeguarding board.
Deborah Lightfoot, who is chairman of the safeguarding children’s board in Harrow, will be the independent joint chair for children’s safeguarding in Richmond and Kingston.
The role includes holding agencies involved in safeguarding to account and to guarantee statutory guidance in relation to serious case reviews.
She will also act as the public face of both boards, monitor best policy and practice and ensure agencies work together effectively.
She said: “I am delighted to take up this challenging new role. “I am passionate about improving children’s lives, particularly those children who are the most vulnerable in both Richmond and Kingston.
“Children can only be kept safe properly if the key agencies work together.
“These are challenging times and there is much to be done. I know all board members are highly committed to achieving this aim, and I am very much looking forward to working with them.”
Councillor Christine Percival, Richmond Council’s cabinet member for children’s services, said: “I am pleased Deborah has become the new independent chairwoman.
“She brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge to the role at a time when the safeguarding of children is under the spotlight across the country. I wish her well in her new role.”
