Giant jam roly polys, made with piles of flour, baskets of eggs and mountains of jam, impressed hungry onlookers when they were unveiled for a TV challenge.
Truffles Catering from Byfleet and Jonquil Bakery from Whitton each whipped up the classic British dessert in a bid to win the golden spoon trophy for TV programme Monster Munchies.
The programme, presented by England rugby player Matt Dawson on the Good Food channel, sees teams go head to head to make the best supersized and scrumptious dishes.
Jonquil’s owner John Matthews said his team found logistics of the 24-hour challenge difficult, as they were limited by oven size and had several cake collapses.
He said: “The team was great, we soldiered on through problems and, despite all the adversity and difficulties we had, it was something unusual and different.”
The roly polys, which weighted up to 2.5kg each, were unveiled for judging at Garsons Farm in Winterdown Road, Esher, on Monday, August 15.
The panel, including actress Toyah Willcox, tucked in to taste the fruits of each team’s labour and selected the winners based on taste, size, and presentation.
The winning team, which will be announced when the show airs at 9pm on Monday, November 7, will receive an oversized golden spoon trophy for their efforts.
